Alexander the Great (Barrett Butler)

1&2) I was a soldier in the army under Alexander the Great and I believe Alexander was a great ruler. He was always in the front of the battle, leading us onward to victory. He was so courageous and made the men feel more confident since we had a leader who would not just send his men into bloodshed. In the Battle of Granicus he told us to launch a quick attack. This allowed us to catch the Persians by surprise and moved us on to our first victory in the Persian empire.  We never lost a battle too. He always led our phalanx to victory over who ever we fought, whether it was the Persians or Greeks. He even got stabbed in the neck and still led our army onward to victory and conquest to take over the world! He even remembered all our names. As we would sit in camps he would always come and talk to us and call each of us by name. All our commanding officers were allowed to return home for holidays to spend time with their families. What a great leader on the battlefield and off. He cared and loved his soldiers, but was also an effective leader. Taking our army and expanding the Macedonian Empire over southwest Asia. And he was only in his 20s. After he died the empire went downhill. Everyone was trying to take charge so war broke out. The empire Alexander strived to expand was now falling apart. When Alexander was leader our culture changed. The Greek culture we grew up living with was now being blended with Egyptian, Persian, and Indian aspects, which created the Hellenistic culture. The impact trade had on the empire was life changing. New ideas and products were being spread out among the empire. I learned about  Buddhism and many Indian customs. Alexandria, the great city our hero founded, flourished with math, science, and philosophy. All this blending of culture made the empire expand and flourish. It was such a magnificent sight to see all this happen, and I got to be a part of it.

3) If I could compare Alexander the Great to another great person in history I would pick George Washington. They both led their people with confidence and strict control. George Washington led the Americans to their freedom and independence and founded the very country we live in today. Over the 235 years after the Revolutionary War, we still consider George Washington great. If it was not for him we would never have the wonderful country that we get to live in. Independence was on the minds of every American and he made their dreams come true. Alexander the Great expanded his empire too and allowed his people to live freely. Even though Alexander is not as remembered as greatly as George Washington, they both fulfilled the needs of their people. Maybe if Alexander lived closer to the present day, he would be remembered better. Either way they are both considered great according to their people.

  1. Wow, I had no idea that he could remember everyone's name, and he even let the commanding officers go home for the holidays? I had never thought about comparing George Washington and Alexander the Great, now that you mention it though, they are very much alike.

  3. In your first answer, I really liked how you explained Alexander as a pretty cool person. You had some pretty good points on how he was a "great" leader. Good choice on comparing George Washington and Alexander, you had good ideas on how they were both powerful leaders.

  4. I like how you started off describing Alexander as a good person instead of being just a good leader. Also, I didn't realized he had gotten stabbed in the neck!! Very good post
