Sarah Margaret Cimino

(1&2)  I, a soldier in Alexander's army believe that Alexander is a very great man and a strong leader. He accomplished so much and impacted very much. Alexander conquered almost all Western Asia from Egypt to India and he never lost a battle. He loved his men very much and knew almost all of their names, his men and enemies came to believe that he was invincible. He was even injured in some of the battles but he suffered through for us. Alexander was always able to bring what we needed at the time and support us. He built his power in a twenty year period while using the phalanx battle formation. Considering Alexander was only 20 years old when he became kind and was so prepared which is very impressive. All of us soldiers feel so lucky and blessed to have someone as organized and ready as him. One of many reasons Alexander was considered so great was because of the Invasion of Persia. There our amy was not much smaller than Persians but we were the first to attack because Alexander commanded that we do so. We defeated them and  then Alexander made his army even larger to face the Macedonians near Issus, this victory gave Alexander control over Anatolia. Alexander now reigned as the superior ruler in southwest Asia but he was always focused on expanding his empire even more. Alexander and us then went on to conquer India and Babylon, shortly after he became very ill with a fever and died at 32 years old. Alexander accomplished so much in the 12 years that he was kind. All of us loved him so much and couldn't believe he had died. After he died, things were different and people fought over control of the empire, then 3 leaders took over. During the time of Alexander ruling, the culture changed. Greek culture had blended with Egyptian, Persian and Indian influences, this was known as the Hellenistic culture. Trade was a huge impact and increased tremendously. Alexandria had eventually become an international community with influences from Egypt and the Aegean. The Alexandria had several unique attractions such as the famous library. Hellenistic scholars brought much knowledge in astronomy, mathematics and physics, and philosophy and art. The new blending of cultures aided Alexander's empire in several ways such as trade and new ideas. Especially for me, it is so fascinating to see all of this happen because it was all under Alexander's control and I was a soldier that got to be part of his tremendous army.

3. Alexander and Abraham Lincoln are alike because they were both considered "great". They were both considered great because of what they accomplished. Alexander expanded a huge empire and won every battle his army fought. Abraham Lincoln led the country through the Civil War, wrote the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves, and brought the US together as one nation. Time has changed the opinion of Alexander the Great but not Abraham Lincoln. People remember Abraham Lincoln more today because he impacted what life would be today and it would not be the same today without him. He was a very valuable man in history and slavery was a huge ongoing concept that he resolved therefor people remember him for that. People now a day don't remember Alexander as much because he didn't have a huge impact on what life would be like today. Don't get me wrong he did do a lot for the empire back then, but he is not as memorable of a man than Abraham Lincoln. Maybe people don't remember him as much because he ruled such a long time ago compared to Abraham Lincoln but everyone really remembers Abraham Lincoln because of the slavery issue.  They were both very great men for what they accomplished and will always be remembered.

  2. I understand your reasoning for thinking that Alexander was a great man. Although, he was a great war general he was incredibly brutal to anyone that apposed him. Once he took the general of an opposing army and dragged around the city tied to a horse alive and the only reason Alexander returned to Babylon was that his troops wouldn't go any farther.

  3. In relation to question three, I really liked your comparison of Alexander and Abrahem Lincoln. I had the idea to compare them too, but I didn't think of a lot of the points you made. Like how Lincoln impacted life today. I also really liked that you recognized that Lincoln is remembered more than Alexander today.

  4. I loved how you talked about him as a person not just a leader. He was a great person. I also liked how you talked about the spread of culture and new ideas!

  5. Chris, I know that Alexander was brutal to some people but every military leader is going to have to do that. There can't always be 100% peace for everyone and in the overall picture Alexander had to to accomplish what he needed to.
